Many authors have that one book or world they keep returning to, time and time again. I, too, am guilty of this habit, and proudly so.
I have been going on adventures with Maverick Twain and his friends on the science fantasy planet called Aerum for nearly six years, and it thrills me that the time is finally nearly here to start sharing those adventures with the world.
Read on to find out more about the Maverick Twain fantasy book series, including what it’s about, who will like it, when you can expect it, and more.

What is Maverick Twain?
Maverick Twain is the title of a young adult and new adult high fantasy book series written by Patrick Boey, who is the sole owner and creator of the Maverick Twain IP and all associated media.
What genre is it?
This series predominantly fall into the wildly popular realm of young adult fantasy books. However, the themes, topics, and styles incorporated into the books also feature certain aspects of other genres, such as:
- Mystery
- Action and adventure
- Science fiction
- Horror
- Coming of age

While many books out there feature one main genre and then many different elements from subgenres, these are the most important aspects of my series at present, and are therefore worth mentioning to those who may be looking for a fantasy book series that combines these enduring literary genres.
What is the series about?
This fantasy book series is about many things — first and foremost, however, it is about magic. Not spells cast by wands and talking dragons, but the ubiquitous magic that is a part of every aspect of the world. The magic that we take for granted everyday, things we wouldn’t be able to do without.

The characters in the Maverick Twain series use magic as a tool and rarely as a gift, and that is where much of the conflict lies. For conflict will happen — that, I can promise you. In this series, you’ll enjoy tense battles, thrilling chases, daring escapes, and large-scale sieges. But you’ll also get quiet intimacy, nostalgia and grief, playful humour, and endearing dialogue. You’ll explore wondrous realms, discover untold truths, question the nature of reality.
Sound like your kind of thing? Me, too.
Who is the Maverick Twain series for?
The Maverick Twain series is most suitable for young people aged 13 and up. It contains scenes depicting violence, frightening themes, animal cruelty, and language not suitable for young children. Additionally, Maverick Twain can be read not just by teenagers and young adults, but adults of all ages. With mature undertones and value for teenagers and adults alike, this fantasy book series has something for everyone.
The Themes
The Maverick Twain series is, at its heart, a tale of a group of young people, so uncertain, lost, and disillusioned with their lot in life, coming together to face something that affects them all—affects the whole world which they’ve taken for granted for so long.
It’s about friendship, it’s about growing up, it’s about finding strength where you didn’t know you had it. And though it takes place in a world where magic is ubiquitous, sleighs ride through the air, magical animals cast powerful spells, and the planet is powered by a cosmic force called the Stream, the real fantasy lies elsewhere, just out of reach, or perhaps somewhere we knew all along.
The World
Without giving too much away too early, the events of Maverick Twain: In Search of Moonflowers take place on a planet called Aerum. While similar in many respects to our own planet Earth, Aerum is also wildly different. While we rely on technology and fossil fuels, the residents of Aerum have their magic.

There is an age-old debate of whether what we consider to be magic is truly science unexplained, and that is very much the approach taken with the magical system in Maverick Twain. If you’re interested in science fantasy and meticulously planned magical rules, disciplines, and systems, this is the world waiting for you to explore it. Find out more when Maverick Twain: In Search of Moonflowers hits shelves sometime in the near future.
The Characters
In any fantasy book series, the key to making people care is the characters. It’s always tricky to make a world and narrative feel like they truly matter — but to those conundrums, the characters are the secret key. Even if plot revolves around celestial dragons, walking trees, exploding planets, and colliding dimensions – the audience will believe it if they feel that the characters truly matter in these impossible circumstances. If the characters are real, we will believe anything.
And that brings me to my cast of characters in the Maverick Twain series. These heroes, villains, and those in between represent the very best and the very worst of humanity. Again, with spoilers, here are the key figures in the Maverick Twain canon:
- Maverick Twain
- Hamora Almagamela
- Tre Goodshow
- Rueath Holliday
- Billeus Daire
- Vallisien
- Horatio Twain
- Camilla Demara
- Dana Defleur
- Tobias Kane
- The Seeker
- Arabella Mercy
