Future’s End — Lyrics
1. voyagers
Where are we going? Where are we going? Where are we going tonight?
Where are we going? Where are we going tonight?
Packed all my bags, follow the neon lights
Out in the dark, not a soul in sight
We journey on until we feel alright
And I won’t be contacted
This trip un-redacted
Feels like we’re nowhere bound
Heading for the lost and found
We are voyagers in the dark
We’re catching up
To the signal sent to a distant star
Voyagers travel light
Don’t rest our eyes
Til the moonlight leads us home
And I won’t be going alone
Getting bizarre, out with the stars tonight
Or maybe it’s day, either way we’ll try
To make sense of our past tense
Light years ahead of current events
We’ll realign the constellations
Move planets with flirtation
Burn up the asteroids
Save your snacks for the neon void
This endless road so dark
Is a galaxy
The towns and cities, stars
We are lost between
Space and time
We are voyagers in the dark
We’re catching up
To the signal sent to a distant star
Voyagers travel light
Don’t rest our eyes
Til the moonlight leads us home
And I won’t be going alone
Where are we going?
Where are we going?
We’re neither here nor there
And all we want
No all we need is
To know that we’re going somewhere
And we are, we are, we are
We are voyagers in the dark
We’re catching up
To the signal sent to a distant star
Voyagers travel light
Don’t rest our eyes
Til the moonlight leads us home
And I won’t be going alone
No I’m not going alone
No I won’t be going alone
2. a place where we can go
I went out to the restaurant
But they had closed, and I’d forgot
I went in search of our old haunts
Second hand bookstore, hidden cafe
Secret garden by the bay
We got our kicks at the arcade
How I wish we could have stayed
Home sweet home, a place where we can go
Home sweet home, a place we’ll never be alone
Sunset at dawn in an alien town
I tipped the waitress seven pounds
All she said was ‘c’est la vie’
As she slipped it back to me
After work, by the harbourside lights
I saw a couple guys locked in a fight
But they fell apart with one embrace
They were just looking for their place
And there’s a place that no one knows
It’s a place where I now go
Hold me tighter, and don’t let go,
In this place we’ll call our own
Home sweet home, a place where we can go
Home sweet home, a place we’ll never be alone
It’s home sweet home, and after all we’ve known
It’s still home sweet home, the place we’ll never be alone
And whenever the world’s too much to bear
We can always disappear
Because no one will find us here
Home sweet home, a place where we can go
And though we roam, they’ll never find out where we hide
We’ll never be alone
No matter where we roam
We’ll always come back home
Back to the place where we can go
3. we’re still having fun
2 AM and the DJ plays a ten year old song
For us jaded old kids
And we dance just like there’s nothing wrong
‘Cause for a moment nothing is
The green strobe lights, they blind our eyes
We are scandalised
While our feet slip on drinks on the floor
And the men in the corners drinking alone are trying to score
But hey, we’re all still having fun
The worst is yet to come
And we’re all still so damn young
Like the night, we’ve just begun
To have our fun
Out the door, we’re looking for more ecstasy
But all we see is lechery and sin
In the harsh city lights we realise
We couldn’t wait to grow up and be served harassment with a grin
So we strap on our Docs and we walk eleven blocks to the park
Huddle in the dark
And we play some truth or dare
Up the road in the safety of my home
We dance along to our ten year old songs
And no one stares and no one cares
And if we close our eyes
We won’t be surprised
To find we’re all grown up
And I can hold your hand
And tell you that I’m grand
While our friends are throwing up
And you tell me
Hey, we’re all still having fun
We’re still going out too much
‘Cause we’re all still so damn young
Like the night, we’ve just begun
To have our fun
A song we used to hear
Rewinds us back to yesteryear
Reminds us that we’re still having fun
We’re all grown up now, mum
And we’re here to have some fun
We’re all grown up now, mum
And we’re here to have some fun
Hey, we’re all still having fun
We’ve got a song that’ll still be sung
Cause we’re all still so damn young
Like the night, we’ve just begun
To have our fun
We’re still having fun
‘Cause we’re still so young
Yes, we’re still having fun
We’re still having fun
We’re still having fun
We’re still having fun
4. childhood’s end
It’s gone 3 am, and your living room starts to spin
Between days, dimensions
The bed beckons, you pull me in
And you’re feeling so lonely
‘Cause all of our friends
Are so grown up
You know we’re at childhood’s end
But I promise you that time will never change my mind
Or the kind of love I have for you
And you promise me that life will get better once we find
Someone we can love
Someone right for me, and right for you
Remember the day
When we watched Neverland explode
And you cried on my shoulder
We wish on each sunset
The world will not end ‘til
We know which road to follow forever
But while we were waltzing
The world changed to four
And the life that we planned out
Is nevermore
But I promise you that time will never change my mind
Or the kind of love I have for you
And you promise me that life gets better once we find
Someone we can love
Someone right for me, and right for you
Right for you
I promise you that time will never change my mind
Or the kind of love I have for you
And you promise me that life gets better once we find
Someone we can love
Someone right for me, and right for you
5. burning bridges
Through the jungle there’s a railroad track
But I don’t need anything to find my way back
‘Cause I can make it if I follow you
You’re blazing a trail to your next rendezvous
Honey, your juice box is bubbling with foam
Guess Jesus from Kmart got sick of selling dope
And I’m out here on the edge of someday
While Karen from high school lights up Broadway
Hey-hey
Am I doing enough?
Should I be falling in love?
And working too much?
Hey-hey
I’m burning my bridges
Never learned long division
So what am I missing?
I’m too damn old to be just twenty-one
Repeating the mantra ‘I’m still having fun’
And though I’m proud of what you’ve got up to
I’m a selfish bastard and I don’t wanna lose to you, no!
Hey-hey
Everyone’s doing enough
Everyone’s falling in love
And drinking too much
Hey-hey-ay
While I’m burning my bridges
Never did my revision
Tell me, what am I missing?
Come find me in middle grade novels
And the 2nd verses of songs I used to hate
And yes, you have my full attention
As I enter a distant dimension
Where we sail the seven seas
To a rock and roll symphony
Where the future is bright and so are we
Hey-hey-ay
We’re all doing enough
We’re all falling in love
Working and drinking too much
Hey-hey-ay
We’re burning our bridges
Never asked for permission
To find what we’re missing
Hey-hey-ay
I’ll build my own bridges
Hey-hey-ay
And I’ll find what I’m missing
6. dressed to kill
A million dollars never looked so good
You’re like a superstar from Hollywood
Please let me take your picture
And refill
Drink up, you’re dressed to kill
Violet, crimson, emerald or indigo
What’s your shade of murder tonight?
And before the crime begins
Do you feel good in your skin?
Nevermind the toxic wine
The rules we tried to write
‘Cause when you start dancing, it’s a movie scene
Right off the silver screen
A million dollars never looked so good
You’re like a superstar from Hollywood
And I’m your paparazzi
Your shoe shine
Don’t ask me if you caught my eye
Because you’re dressed to kill
I’ll die tonight, I know I will
Pretending that I’m fine with you
Smiling daggers to my heart, I still
Want you, you’re dressed to kill
I’m not sorry for the murderous intent I wear
I’m fighting sadness with madness tonight
And you intoxicate me faster
Than any wine, I’d date disaster
If we’d not said never, ’cause I’m thinking I might
Turn the dancing dirty, just a little bit
Blame it on the top 40s hits
A million dollars never looked so good
You’re like a superstar from Hollywood
And I’m your jawline candy
Your theme song
Don’t ask me if there’s something wrong
Because you’re dressed to kill
I’ll die tonight I know I will
Pretending that I’m fine with you
Breathing arrows down my neck, I still
Want you, you’re dressed to kill
Ooh, if I kissed you I would die
But there’s a sparkle in your eye
Did you wear this for me tonight?
Damn the rules and damn the hindsight
Pull me close let’s have a tongue fight
You’re dressed to kill
I’ll die tonight I know I will
A poisoned lover’s kiss to lie so still
A happy tragedy, it’s death by thrill
Because we dressed to kill
7. trying times
Sixteen Armageddons on at Future’s End
Stacy’s burning blogs to reach her long lost friend
While I sing my daily prophecy
Of angels on the motorway
Right here on the edge of someday
There’s picket lines and neon signs in No Person’s Land
The devil doesn’t care if you are woman or man
Supreme has ceased to mean a thing
But the death of the modern world
So we draw swords, rally queens and kings
And fight a battle no one wins
But there’s C4 in the thoroughfare
Superman’s playing lie or dare
While our friends get burned for what they wear
And who they love, in hell, above
But I guess I’ll see you at the bar at the end of the world
Hey, stranger, how you doing?
A simple smile, there’s nothing to it
Wanna fight, let’s fight with kindness
Take a pint downstairs and find us
Singing that we’ll be fine in these trying times
These are trying times
We’re products of the peace talks in the ego war
Our cousins all are swimming home, but won’t before
They’re consumed by malnutrition
Or begging kids for ammunition
Right there on the edge of someday
40,000 years of evolution, well, it ends with me
‘Cause I wait at home for revolution, feigning sleep
And you say when we hadn’t lived
We loved life more
You do your subway wall graffiti makeup
Ready for a corporate shakeup
No, nothing’s like before
The decades that America thought
One guitar, two hands, three chords
Could save us all from a Roman fall
But I guess I’ll see you at the bar at the end of the world
Hey, stranger, how you doing?
A simple smile, there’s nothing to it
Wanna fight, let’s fight with kindness
Take a pint downstairs and find us
Singing, dancing, crying through these trying times
Like monuments reaching vainly for the sky
Down here, we try, we try, we try
We’re singing things too dangerous to say
Burning money we saved for a rainy day
Hey, partner, how you doing?
A simple smile, there’s nothing to it
Wanna fight, let’s fight with kindness
Remember all the ties that bind us
That’s how we’ll survive in these trying times
These are trying times
Oh, but we’ll be fine
In these trying times
‘Cause we’re trying
8. at the end of everything
How do we go back round the bend?
Where do we go when we have seen the end?
And we gave our best
But our blows landed against the walls
Built for our safety, should the skies fall
We never wanted to end up this way
To barely know life before the end of days
But I recall how we laughed til we cried
And lay, drowning in sunlight
Where can I find the buried light?
When do I sleep when there’s no day or night?
But I recall
How we lived
We never wanted anything
Never needed anything less
Just to be our best
And we never needed to protest
Never needed a magical quest
Just to be our best
But our intentions, our hopes and our fears
They all fell, before the end of everything
And now it’s time for the new world to begin
At the end of everything
At the end of everything
We never wanted anything
Never needed anything less
Just to be our best
And we never needed to protest
Never needed a magical quest
Just to be our best
Just to be our best
Now we are lain to rest
9. post-post-apocalypse
I’m just your average architect
Laying cobblestone down over fighter planes
I cover up the wreckage of our intellect
So we can decorate and you’ll be entertained
I know you’re new here
But know there’s nothing to fear
‘Cause I’m glad you could make it
To my spaceship
Safe haven
For the misfits
Where everyone’s upset
Full of regret
But we don’t fret
Because we know we’re gonna be alright
In the post-post-apocalypse
At the end of the future and the start of a myth
In the post-post-apocalypse
We tell the stories of the old world to the kids
My children flew the coop, I’m all alone
Soon as they turned ten, it was childhood’s end
I strap on jet boots and I fly back home
To get lost in the stars with my robot friend
After the future
The present’s our new start
Hey! I’m glad you could make it
To my spaceship
Safe haven
For the misfits
Where everyone’s upset
Full of regret
But we don’t fret
Because we know we’re gonna be alright
In the post-post-apocalypse
At the end of the future and the start of a myth
In the post-post-apocalypse
Leave the mysteries of the old world for the kids
In the post-post-apocalypse
At the end of the future and the start of a myth
In the post-post-apocalypse
Leave the mysteries of the old world
For the kids
Life is good
In the post-post-apocalypse
10. lightning strikes
You hit me like a lightning strike
In the middle of the day, but you take me deep into the night
And you shine so bright
Through the haze, and the blight
Through the post-apocalyptic firelight
Out of the sky and into my heart
A billion volts in a work of art
The odds are never
But the weather changes
When you say, ‘Hello’
And the lightning strikes
And everything’s aglow
When the lightning strikes
And I know
What the lightning likes
So what do you say I
Show the lightning a good time tonight
We shelter from the rain
And the Ferris Wheel
Sparks the noradrenaline that makes me go insane
When you laugh at my stupid jokes
It starts a dozen electric fires
Dancing in my bones
I know it’s a dangerous game
But every time you call my name
I start to shiver
It’s not winter
It’s just when you say hello
And the lightning strikes
And everything’s aglow
When the lightning strikes
And I know
What the lightning likes
So what do you say I
Show the lightning a good time tonight
You find me now
A heat-seeking bolt to a lightning rod
And you light up the clouds
Maybe I’m prey to an act of God but
All I wanna do is be struck by you
You say hello
And the lightning strikes
And everything’s aglow
When the lightning strikes
And I know
What the lightning likes
So what do you say I
Show the lightning a good time
You say hello
And the lightning strikes
And everything’s aglow
When the lightning strikes
And I know
What the lightning likes
So what do you say I
Show the lightning a good time tonight
A good time tonight
11. dear alula
You were such a curious child
Running out to lunch with danger
You grew up fast and lived faster
Some called you a walking disaster
When you got hurt, you got back up
When you made friends, they brought you luck
When the world went straight to hell
You sat down, and said ‘Oh, well’
Dear Alula,
You’re doing your best
Listen to your soul
And forget the rest
Cos you’re just a kid in this new world
Trying to live
So dear Alula
You’ve got so much love to give
The dust has cleared from our sordid past
Now the utopia’s here at last
And you’ve got so much left to live for
You have the most beautiful soul as your second half
And a bundle of joy that’s gifting you laughs
It looks like you’ve got it made
Dear Alula,
You’re doing your best
Listen to your soul
And forget the rest
And don’t you let go,
Of the things that you’ve earned through all the years
So dear Alula
Now you’re in the clear
Now you’re in the clear
Now you’re in the clear
12. foreverland
How small are we
Water and dust in a Black Sea
Infinite realities that we try to get to
But we forget
How good it feels to have the sun shine, to look up, and see blue sky
And to run straight through a downpour with a lover by your side
We are the architects of the soul
In a discotheque, and we call
Our closest friends
Down the beaten trail
Main characters on the page
Inheritors of the age
We’re writers, sculptors of our fairy tale
And to Foreverland we’ll sail
And so we dance
In a field of grass through the looking glass
In memories of moments that we’ll never know
Lands we’ll never go
The universe in our backyard is brighter than it seems
And stardust lines the pockets of our hand-me-down jeans
We are the architects of the soul
In a discotheque, and we call
Our closest friends
Down the beaten trail
Main characters on the page
Inheritors of the age
We’re writers, sculptors of our fairy tale
And to Foreverland we’ll sail
Forever on the trail
So we’ll never have to know
The pain of growing old, and all we’ll know is
Happy songs (happy songs)
And happy love (happy love)
And happy walking, talking trees
In a happy, golden fantasy
13. so long, sweetheart
Another day, another dawn
Another moonrise to write your name upon
Remake the stars for your long lost friend
Your enemy when the melancholy ends
Through our paintings, through our song
With three chords, we’ll all learn to get along
Though it’s strange as anything I’ve heard
Forever’s such a lonely word
We dream
Of eternal rest
Could it be
That we tried our best?
What would you say if I told you we were born to die?
Though magic grants us life it also tells us lies
Oh, it’s so wrong
So I say so long
So long sweetheart
I saw you at the star across the bakery
Try and explain how much you mean to me
But then you run your fingers down my spine
To uncover the secrets I’d locked up so tight
All we are is a kaleidoscope
Shifting and sliding to make room for each other’s hope
And soon dissolve over the sea
To find the realms beyond our reach
Yes we dream
Of eternal endlessness
Could it be
That it’s truly happiness?
What would you say if I told you we were born to die?
Though magic grants us life it also tells us lies
Oh, but we’re so strong
So let’s live so long
So long sweetheart
Take my heart in your hand and I swear that we will never die
From the ashes and sands we will soar out over the endless sky
Oh, this is our song
So let’s sing so long
So long sweetheart
